Here are some pictures of a recent hammer shank restoration on an 1890s Chickering concert grand. The brass flanges are not available from suppliers, nor their matching shanks. The only option was to replace everything that had worn out

The shanks wired up for cleaning and soaking The flanges lined up after polishing,before bushing

The original bushing cloths,notice how they extended into the gap to form a bird's eye The flanges soaking, if they are soaked evenly then they dry straight

adding glue to the end of the bushing cloth Pulling the glued sections inside the flange ears

some flanges bushed and size-pinned drying on the glue pot lid The knuckle core glued back into the shank

first end of knuckle leather glued in place other end of leather being glued in place

excess felt before trimming with razor trimmings from sides of knuckles

After this the shank is as good as new, and will perform as designed in the environment it was made for.
