Here at Hampshire Piano, we take great pride in being able to offer a very wide assortment of services, most of which are performed by the same two pair of skilled hands right under this one roof.
Services available include:
moving pianos localy and regionally. We can also move pianosas inter-state and inter-nationally through any of the fleet movers by acting as a depot.
storage options for pianos. They range from simple storage in our mildly heated shop, to having a grand piano stored on its feet with active moisture controll and a regular schedule of tunings to keep it at its prime.
restoration runs the gammut of wants and needs, so we have a number of options to suit a range of budgets.
economy restoration strives to get as many repairs done as possible for the lowest price. To accomplish this the piano is shipped to a wholesale factory on the border with Mexico. The quality of the work they do is passable; especialy their basic black finish. And the quantity of tasks they perform far out strip what we could personally provide for the same price. In addition, as this service involves so much less of our own precious work hours, we are willing to offer you this option at a significant discount.
conventional restoration is best characterised as "parts replacement." This is the common approach in most rebuilding shops. This involves new actions, new soundboards, new parts of any kind where the original is in need of enough work to justify replacement. Like any other reputable shop, we can order these new parts and fit them into a piano. Perhaps unlike most, we do not charge a markup. This allows the customer to buy the very best components available at a more resonable expence.
conservatorial restoration is best described as "parts preservation." This is the type of work that we live for. We are in love with old music wood. The finest pianos of the best years were made of the most select woods, seasoned for years before their use. We have spent the last 20 years developing techniques that both preserve the original material and restore its proper role in the production of tone. We can recrown and reinstall a 100 year old soundboard, and because the wood is so wonderfully aged produce a board more responsive than any made of new wood. We have also developed ways to completely clean, re-felt, re-pin,and re-leather a set of hammer shanks. Hammer shanks were made from possibly the most select maple of all. The old shanks are considerably stiffer than new ones, making power transfer that much more positive. These pianos of the finest make have the potential to perform beyond the capabilities of their modern counterparts because of the nature of the wood they were made from and the time that has past
