up-108D3 console
This is the 108D3 console piano. Standing 43 inches tall this is the smallest piano in the pearl River line, yet it is not a spinet but a true console. The direct blow action, gives the feeling of controll found most often in larger pianos. It features a full perimiter plate for an extreemly ridgid strung-back resulting in improved tuning stability. It may be diminutive, but it has a pleasing case resonance that is sure to inspire young players. This is the best beginners' piano I have seen. For much less than what will be spent on instruction, the student can be given the advantage of learning on a new piano. It has none of the built in frustratiions that are so common to second hand pianos. Each time the student reaches a plateu of proficiency, and is ready to challenge themselves further, this piano has the qualities to reward them for that effort.
One small point on construction: If you do any shopping for these "continental consoles", you will see that almost none come with any kind of forward support in the form of legs. This always struck me as a little dangerous as the bases of these pianos tend to be narrowed for esthetic purposes. This leaves the piano top-heavy with an eccentric weight to the front. This is a formula for falling on its face.
If you examine the picture above, you can see that the 108D3 is equipped with a small toe in the front. It may not seem like mich, but it increases the depth of the bottom by over 25%. This moves the forward support point out under the eccentric weight of the keybed, making this piano much more stable, much more safe.
It also provides room for a set of wheels. This makes the piano much easier to move arround the room, and allows for the use of carpet protectors. The average continental console sits right on its bottom board, and will eventually leave a 60 by 14 inch flat-spot in the carpet. It will also be less stable while it dents your carpet, as carpets are spongy support.
This toe is a small but telling detail. It would be easier to make a console without it, but the it would not be as good as it could be. This seems to be the Pearl River philosophy: " quality first; all else will follow." We have included some photos to show some of its quality construction techniques.
Stop in and see this wonderfull little piano. Both the piano and its price are a delight.
